Task 3

Comparing two points of view

Length
120 to 180 words in total
Text type
A neutral summary (40 to 60 words) then your opinion (80 to 120 words)
Goal
This task assesses two skills: summarizing the opposing views of two short documents, then giving your own well-argued opinion in a clear, structured way.

Structure and method

1. A relevant title

The title sums up what is at stake. The « A or B? » pattern works very well.

2. The summary (40 to 60 words)

Summarize the main ideas of both documents objectively, in three steps:

  • Introduce the topic: « La question de [thème] divise les opinions. »
  • Present the first view: « D'un côté, le premier document affirme que… »
  • Present the second one with a linking word: « En revanche, le second met l'accent sur… »
Example

Video games divide opinion. The first document praises their educational benefits and how they improve coordination. The second, however, stresses the risk of addiction and lower grades when they are overused.

Avoid: giving your opinion in the summary, or summarizing each document separately without linking them.

3. Your opinion (80 to 120 words)

  • State your position clearly: « À mon avis, les jeux vidéo peuvent être un outil précieux s'ils sont utilisés avec modération. »
  • Support your arguments with a concrete example: « Par exemple, certains jeux éducatifs améliorent les compétences en mathématiques. »
  • End with a thought or a solution: « En somme, les jeux vidéo peuvent enrichir la vie des jeunes s'ils sont encadrés. »
Full example

In my opinion, video games are a powerful learning tool when used wisely. They help develop cognitive and social skills. However, overuse can harm young people's well-being. To get the most out of them, parents should set clear rules and choose suitable games. That way, video games can become a rewarding, balanced activity.
